Site notes

April 27, 2019

I have applied the grey layout to the homepage as well.

March 29, 2019

I have finally completed a long overdue reorganisation of the Miscellaneous and News and Articles section of the is site.

  • Sections
    • "Tools that I use",
    • "Model railroad Photography",
    • "Modelling Tips"

have all moved to the News and Articles section.

  • This left the Miscelanuous Section virtually empty which has been subsequently been renamed to "About" and is now especially reserved for this single subject only

Dec 1, 2017

I have abandoned the old Jalbum Chameleon skin which is no longer supported. I took the trouble to convert all albums to the Turle style for which I provided with a specific set of parameters to blend in to my website

Dec 30, 2015

After more than three years I have freshened up the site's design. Most important changes are the use of light and dark grey colours in the reading sections and the use of sans-serif fonts. All this aimed to improve readability

Nov, 7 2012

Added a persistent page indicator in the vertical menus

Oct 21, 2012

Added a "back to top" button to all Garrattfan pages (except most photo essays)

Oct 4, 2012

I have widened the layout, creating more space for pre-existing tables, for the submenus and for the social media buttons.

This site is best viewed on a minimum screen resolution of 1280x1024. Google analytics have shown that this will suit over 90% of all visitor

The site has been tested for

  • IE9
  • Firefox 15 (windows)
  • Firefox 15 (Linux)
  • Opera 12 (Linux)
  • Opera 12 (Windows).
  • Chrome 21

I expect it to work correctly on the most recent versions of other browsers.

Sorry if you have an older version, that's ok with me but don't expect me to do all the hard work to keep you comfy on outdated software. The site will work however but with somewhat less fancy features.

Aug 31, 2012

All new layout officially launched.

This site has recently been reconstructed and restructured. After four years of continuous and not always consistent growth it became ever harder to maintain. Updates were often done quickly, doing things that "I needed to sort out later". Yeah sure. After all my prime interest is about model railroading and not about building sites. Moreover, the original setup restricted overall changes to the layout. The various standards I used over time reacted differently to overall changes necessitating laborious manual reconstruction. I built a site for a colleague builder in the summer of 2012 and the experience I gained from that gave me the courage to do this one time page by page reconstruction and setup an an entirely new structure that makes the site easy to maintain.

What's different?

  • I modernised the site, giving it better looks.
  • It features a consistent "boxed" layout making easier reading.
  • It also features menus and submenus on all main pages providing easier navigation
  • Layout styles, couloirs, lettering etc are used consistently
  • Technically I switched from HTML-frames, an outdated way of lay-outing your site, to the modern CSS. As a result you access only one page at a time (frames: five!), and you always get the menus, no matter how you enter a page.
  • Not quite understanding the structure of CSS I littered the entire site with inline CSS styles. I removed but the most necessary ones.
  • This all should make the site faster, nicer, easier to navigate and easier to maintain.
  • During the reconstruction I found many pages that did reflect the current state of affairs in projects and many unfinished pages. I'm working on them to finish these jobs but that will take a little more time

I hope you appreciate the changes and return many times.

Although I have tested the site thoroughly it is almost inevitable that some errors remain. If you find any, you are kindly requested to to me and I will look into it as soon as possible. This way you can be of great help in improving and supporting this site!!
